Rare US Army helicopter pilot, AFH-1 (Anti-Fragmentation Helmet Nr 1) flight helmet, made by GENTEX, dated 1974. Size "MEDIUM". Complete with boom mike, cable, earphones, covers and plus. Leather covered foam pads. Single visor with securing knob. Mint condition. This is a special version of the well known APH-5A, much heavier (800g more) with a shell made of layers of ballistic and resin. This weight excess made it unpopular amongst the helicopter crews in Vietnam due the heat of climate. It was declared obsolete and superseded by the lighter and more sound protective SPH-4 . Iconic helmet of the last years of Vietnam war with the AC-130 Gunship and UH-1 helicopter crews.
