US Air Force Test Pilot Toptex Flight Helmet & Mask

A very rare US Air Force test pilot flight helmet and oxygen mask set, circa 1955-58. The helmet is a Protection Inc. Toptex 3AS model, size MEDIUM. It features a simple tinted visor with the original cutout for the A-13A mask and a locking system specific to this model. The helmet is complete with its integrated earphones, cord, and U-75/U plug. The MS-22001 mask, manufactured by MSA (Mine Safety Appliances), dated 1954, is a LARGE size and equipped with a microphone, cord, and plug. The liner and rim (showing wear) are covered in natural leather. The mask is secured by two leather straps with snap fasteners. This is a rare original configuration, as most Toptex helmets were modified with Hardman-type straps. This type of helmet was used by US Air Force test pilots and various American aeronautical firms from the early 1950s to the late 1970s. A famous photo of test pilot Milburn "Mel" Apt shows him at the controls of his X-2 with an identical helmet.
