Original regulation US Army Air Force A-2 pilot's jacket, made of cowhide leather. US size 38. Talon zipper in excellent condition. Original lining. Traces of manufacturer's regulation label. Knitwear has been replaced. Wear at the shoulders and collar. Issued to S/Sgt. Vernon D. Hasley of the 723rd Bomb Squadron, 450th Bomb Group, a gunner who flew 50 missions in a B-24 Liberator during the Italian Campaign. His wife's first name, "LARUE," was hand-painted in yellow on the left chest, as was the name of his aircraft, "TUNG HOY," on the back. It is rare to find painted jackets that were actually used in flight; most surviving examples were commemorative pieces or "party" jackets. Repeated wear and tear of the parachute harness before, during and after flights causes characteristic and irreparable damage that is easily recognizable on jackets that have been actually used during missions flights.
