WWII US Army Air Force 1st Lt Officer service jacket and trousers uniform set. US Army Air Force issued to a 15th Air Force B-17 Pilot. US made M-1940 pattern with removable waist belt. OD#51 wool twill fabric. Embroidered cotton on wool backing US made USAAF shoulder patch on left shoulder. US made Sterling pin back pilot wings. Officers U.S and Army Air Corps winged propellers collar insignias set. Sterling 1st Lt shoulder rank bars. Purple Heart, Air Medal and EAME campaign medal with 2 battle stars. Trousers are US regulation made dated August 1942 size W31L.
Hat, shirt and tie aren't included.
1st Lt. Paul A. Hazelton of the 99th Bomb Group, 15th AF, was awarded the Purple Heart after April 25, 1944, during his 17th bombing mission over Austria when he was struck by flak and injured in the face by flying glass from his cockpit. He nevertheless managed to land his B-17 in Yugoslavia despite his torn oxygen mask and the dizziness caused by high-altitude suffocation. He lost his right eye and required facial reconstruction as a result of his injuries. He would not be awarded the DFC for another 43 years, hence the absence of the DFC ribbon on his bar.
